Bees Projects Upgrades Dodge with HD Headache Rack

There are some inherent hazards that come with hauling heavy gear into the bed. If you’re carrying firewood, construction materials, or bumping your way down rugged off-road trails with a bed full of recovery gear, a shifting load can mean instant disaster for your rear glass.

In a recent build series, our friend Martin of Bees Projects took his fully rebuilt 2002 Dodge Ram, complete with a rust-free bed, fresh NHOU undercoating, and aggressive mud tires, to the next level. After having suffered a shattered rear window thanks to a stray piece of firewood, he knew exactly what this heavy-duty work rig needed next: a Westin Automotive Headache Rack.

Here’s a breakdown of the installation, the product features, and why a headache rack is a must-have upgrade for any serious truck build.

First Impressions: Built for the Abuse

Right out of the box, the Westin HD Headache Rack sets the tone for durability. Shipped with care to protect the sleek black powder-coat finish, the kit includes everything needed for a rock-solid mount: comprehensive instructions, essential tools, and high-quality hardware.

For off-roaders and fabricators who appreciate build quality, the construction stands out immediately. Constructed from thick, flat steel bar uprights, this rack is built to take a beating.

“These welds are very smooth to me. It looks like those are robot welded, and I’m good with that.”

– Martin, Bees Projects

Available in both black and white powder-coat finishes to match your rig’s color scheme, the rack also features four top-mounted brackets. These are perfect for wiring up a custom lighting array – whether you need forward-facing LED light bars or rear-facing chase lights and work pods – you’ve got the perfect foundation.

The Installation: Pro Tips for a Perfect Fit

Installing bed accessories on older trucks can sometimes be a challenge. Fortunately, the Westin HD Headache Rack is engineered to be highly compatible, even allowing Martin to retain his existing cross-bed toolbox.

Here is a quick look at the install process:

  • Pre-Assembly: Bolting the brackets to the main uprights is straightforward, utilizing the supplied 18mm nuts, button head bolts, and washers. Assembling it on a flat garage floor ensures everything is perfectly level before it touches the truck.
  • Marking and Drilling: Once test-fitted on the bed rails, the installation requires drilling 9/16” holes. Pro-Tip: Whenever you drill into your truck bed, use a step bit for a clean hole, and apply a dab of rust-preventative paint to the bare metal edges before mounting your hardware.
  • Mounting Hardware: Westin makes securing the rack easy, even in hard-to-reach stake pockets. The kit includes specialized T-nuts alongside a handy wire-feed tool, allowing you to snake the hardware perfectly into place from underneath the bed rail without tearing your hands apart.

The rack was bolted down tight to the bed rail, completely transforming the look and utility of Martin’s Ram.

The Verdict: Function Over Flash

A headache rack should provide genuine peace of mind. Under heavy braking, it may be the only thing standing between a heavy payload and your cab.

“I didn’t fix this up to be a show truck. I just want it to look really nice as a work truck, and that’s exactly what I got out of this rack.”

– Martin, Bees Projects

Now that the rack is installed, the only question left is: How would you configure the lighting? With four available mounting points, the combinations for trail and work lights are endless.
